Christian Doppler and his effect in the stadium

The Doppler effect has always been easy to hear on race tracks. In the stadium, only the players perceive the frequency change of a sharply shot ball flying past them. Recently, the Doppler effect can be seen by everyone in Salzburg’s Red Bull Arena, namely on the jerseys of FC Red Bull Salzburg players. While the 2026/27 away jersey is inspired by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the club is dedicating this season’s home jerseys to the Salzburg physicist Christian Doppler and the Doppler effect named after him, in that “the dynamic elements on the front […] pick up on the movement of sound waves”.

For the “science enthusiasts” among the fans, there is additional information on the homepage: “Christian Doppler was born in Salzburg in 1803 and is one of the most important Austrian physicists. In 1842, he discovered the Doppler effect, which describes how the perceived frequency of sound or light waves changes when the source and observer move relative to each other. His discovery still forms the basis for radar, sonar, ultrasonic and GPS, among other things.”

The Christian Doppler Fund is pleased that – as Clemens Maria Hutter states in his biography – “the most important Salzburg citizen for mankind” and his “millennium effect” (Nobel Prize winner Anton Zeilinger) will be brought to the attention of the general public with this campaign and wishes FC Red Bull Salzburg every success in the “Doppler jerseys”.
